Biofouling Requirements
New Zealand has many beautiful marine environments and needs to protect them from harmful pests and diseases. After May 2018, all vessels must arrive in New Zealand Territory with a “clean hull” according to introduced biosecurity requirements. The definition of a clean hull varies according to a vessel’s itinerary.
Risk items that are either restricted or prohibited NZ entry may include:
Catalano can advise on arrival requirements, confirm if your team qualifies for the Visa Waiver Scheme, and assist with applications for a Superyacht Crew Visa, Owner Visitor Visa, or NZeTA.
All crew and visitors must complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) upon arrival.
Some visitors and transit passengers can travel to New Zealand without a visa if they get a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before they travel. It is much the same thing as ESTA or ETA in USA or Canada. Please speak to our team if you need one in place.
We also provide support for other international visas, including B1/B2.
CRUISING PERMITS
Some regions in New Zealand require cruising permits, and our team will guide you through the process to ensure full compliance with local regulations. Speed restrictions also apply in sensitive areas – for example, a 10-knot limit is enforced in the Waitematā Harbour to protect whales and other marine life, helping you avoid costly fines and prevent environmental damage.
What are the approved ports for superyacht arrival in New Zealand?
All international vessels entering New Zealand must first dock at a designated Port of First Arrival (POFA) to clear Customs and Biosecurity (MPI) inspections. For superyachts over 24m, we recommend Silo Marina in Auckland or Marsden Cove in Whangārei due to their specialized deep-water infrastructure and dedicated shore support facilities.
Approved Ports of First Arrival (POFA) To maintain compliance with Aotearoa’s strict maritime borders, your first point of entry must be one of the following approved locations:
Opua: Opua Marine Park, Bay of Islands (Ideal for Northbound entries).
Whangarei: Marsden Cove Marina (Key hub for refit and long-term berthing).
Auckland: Silo Marina / Auckland Central Marina (Advance booking mandatory for vessels over 50m).
Picton: Port Marlborough (Gateway to the South Island and Marlborough Sounds).
Lyttelton: Lyttelton Port of Christchurch (Primary deep-water access for the Southern Alps).
Can I arrive at a non-approved port?
Non-approved port arrivals are strictly prohibited under NZ Maritime Law, except in verified emergencies. However, Catalano Shipping Pacific can facilitate arrivals at alternate locations with prior Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) approval. In our 10+ years of local management, we suggest initiating this permit process at least 30 days prior to arrival to avoid significant delays or penalties.
